September 15: Do we really live in an independent Mexico?

The search for a sovereign and independent nation ended in 1821 in Mexico, after the beginning of the fight for Independence. However, in a globalized world like the one we live in in the 21st century, we can hardly speak of an independent country .

We live in a stage in which a finished product is made with parts or components manufactured in different countries and assembled in others. Mexico is no exception, as it is a country with 15 free trade agreements with more than 50 countries around the world.

The best-known trade agreement is the one that was renewed in 2020 with the United States, the main trading partner of Mexico and Canada, the T-MEC (formerly NAFTA), with which it seeks to make North America the most competitive region in the world.

However, the country is dependent on what is done in countries as far away as China, Japan or South Korea, to name a few examples.

We present in four graphs the relationship that Mexico has with the world:

Being a manufacturing country, Mexico depends on foreign purchases of intermediate products for the production of final products; as well as energy and petroleum products. This is the top ten imports from Mexico.

In addition to the United States, Mexico depends on purchases from the Asian giant China and South Korea. These are the countries that were bought the most last year.

While it is true that the United States is the main trading partner for Mexico, there are countries like China to which Mexico sells more.

Mexico is a power in the automotive industry and flat screens. 80% of what the country exports goes to the United States. Now we present the 10 products that sold the most in 2021.
