Sergio Pérez: "We go blindly into the race"

Sergio Pérez was the only Red Bull driver who rolled in both practice sessions for the 2022 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, after his teammate Max Verstappen was inside the garage almost all the time during the second session due to to various errors in his car.

For his part, Checo Pérez took his Red Bull RB18 to third position in the short run (1:30.150), which represented a disadvantage of 0.212 seconds against the clock of George Russell’s Mercedes, the fastest on Friday.

Pérez finished behind Charles Leclerc in the last attempts, but he did not collect all the information expected by the team, since the red flags caused by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and the Williams of Nicholas Latifi prevented him from riding in ideal conditions.

“It was a difficult day for all the drivers,” said the Mexican at the end of Friday. “I think it was a very difficult session, in total I did one lap on the medium compound and two laps on the soft.”

“Fuel-wise we couldn’t do anything, because of all the red flags and the time we lost.”

Thus, the third position on the stopwatch did not leave Pérez happy due to the lack of information for the rest of the weekend.

“We’re going into the race basically blind, and I think most people are in the same boat as us. For qualifying we have a clearer picture, but things can change very quickly with the weather here.”

The lack of activity on the track added to the lack of adherence, as it is a new track, could be factors for an unpredictable race, according to Checo Pérez.

“There’s not a lot of grip on this track, and it’s a shame because I think the race will be difficult because of that. That being said, I think it’s going to be an interesting race because none of us know exactly where we are.”
