Serial killer and witness: Högel describes his actions

The patient killer Niels Högel has already been convicted. Now the trial against former clinic supervisors is about their guilt. Högel is summoned as a witness.

Oldenburg – The convicted patient killer Niels Högel spoke as a witness in the trial against former clinic supervisors about specific crimes.

He also went into his last murder case in June 2005. At that time he poisoned a woman and injected her with the heart drug Sotalex in the intensive care unit of the Delmenhorst Clinic.

“The condition deteriorated quickly,” said the 45-year-old German in front of the Oldenburg district court. “I remember that death was determined relatively promptly and quickly.” The patient had just been brought to the ward with severe shortness of breath. It was an emergency situation that he “perfidiously” exploited.

Högel’s only witness

It was the third day of negotiations in a row where Högel was the only witness, and more are likely to follow. On the previous occasions, he was questioned intensively for hours by judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys.

The seven accused are three doctors, three senior nurses and an ex-clinic manager of the Oldenburg and Delmenhorst clinics. From the public prosecutor’s point of view, they did not intervene to prevent the ex-carer’s murder, although they recognized its danger.

The charge is, to varying degrees, aiding and abetting manslaughter and attempted manslaughter by omission. Högel was sentenced to life imprisonment for 85 murders in 2019 and is serving his sentence in Oldenburg prison. dpa
