A photo is circulating on Twitter that was taken in an IKA branch in Würzburg and caused outrage among some. To read: “We deliberately do without fries”.
Who does not know it? You’ve just strolled through the first floor of the furniture store giant with the blue and yellow logo when the enticing smell of freshly prepared Köttbullar, hot dogs and other Swedish delicacies fills your nose. Clearly, a detour to IKEA’s own restaurant must be urgent this time too. After a hearty refreshment, it is much easier to browse through the colorful selection of more or less useful decorative items, accessories and plants.
Even vegetarians and vegans now get their money’s worth at the furniture store. In keeping with the spirit of the times, IKEA also offers plant-based alternatives for meaty indulgence – for example in the form of Plantbullar or vegan hot dogs. And if you don’t like it, you can still get the good old fries like almost everywhere else. At least until now.

There has been an angry outcry in certain social media circles in the past few days. Because: A photo from a Würzburg IKEA branch was shared on Twitter, with which the furniture store triggered a culinary scandal, as reported by Merkur.de. On it you can see a sign with the words “Small idea, big effect” and “We deliberately do without fries”. The outrage is great. Is IKEA now doing away with the beloved fries?
The IKEA branch justifies the measure by saying that a portion of French fries causes more than four times as much CO2 in processing and preparation as a portion of boiled potatoes. “By eating consciously, everyone can contribute to reducing greenhouse gases,” says the sign from the Würzburg branch.

“Somehow a symbol for this country,” writes the author of the tweet Mario Mieruch, who is now a non-party politician who entered parliament via the AfD North Rhine-Westphalia state list and was a member of the German Bundestag from 2017 to 2021 was. “We love fries and then we’ll be happy to go somewhere else in the future. Many other users do not understand the outrage surrounding the allegedly banned fries at IKEA – and rather have scorn for the angry commentators: “Of course you can get upset if you can no longer get fries at Ikea. (They weren’t good anyway.) But let’s talk about how sad life is in which a furniture store is your favorite restaurant,” commented one user. Another scoffed: “Seriously? Is it that easy to keep lunatics at bay? If only we had known that sooner!”
“People are really upset now that Ikea no longer offers fries and some want to boycott it. Because of fries. French fries that aren’t even good. In a furniture store,” one user quips, underscoring her incomprehension with a meme from the Shrek movie, in which the main protagonist can be seen with a confused and uncomprehending facial expression.
What is really behind the fries-off in the Würzburg IKEA branch?
Others question the action of the Swedish furniture store for a completely different reason. “I think the real reason why Ikea no longer wants to offer fries is because the price of frying oil has skyrocketed. You then sell it as environmental protection and save a few million! Clever but still obvious!” speculates one user. Another: “Ikea must have the best PR agency in the world: produce disposable furniture, get rid of fries, and the pseudo-environmentally conscious customer says thank you Ikea.”
As it seems, however, everything is only half as wild. “There are currently no plans in Germany to remove French fries from the range,” comments IKEA Germany on the photo with a sign from the Würzburg branch.
