At times, more than 1000 Covid-19 deaths were reported nationwide every day, but the number has now dropped immensely. But the total number of deaths recorded in the wake of the pandemic is high.

Berlin (dpa) – According to the data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), more than 90,000 Covid-19 deaths have now been recorded in Germany. The number was given on Wednesday as 90,074.

The RKI counts verifiably infected people who died directly from Corona and those with previous illnesses for which the cause of death cannot be conclusively clarified as a Covid-19 death. At the end of last year and the beginning of this year, more than 1,000 deaths were reported on a few days.

The infection rate is currently slowing down further. The RKI gave the seven-day incidence nationwide on Wednesday as 13.2 (previous day: 15.5; previous week: 20.8). The value was last lower on September 25th (13.0). On June 16 last year, the incidence was 2.6 – after which it was around three for a few weeks.

The health authorities in Germany currently reported 1455 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is based on the figures from Wednesday, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5:11 a.m. For comparison: a week ago the value was 3254 infections. According to the information, 137 new deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 107 deaths.

The institute has counted 3,717,625 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, however, since many infections are not recognized. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 3,590,900.

The nationwide seven-day R-value was 0.71 (previous day: 0.72) according to the RKI management report on Wednesday evening. This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 71 more people. The R-value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides; if it is consistently higher, the number of cases increases.
