Several dead and 100 injured after tropical storm hits Mozambique

Maputo – A tropical storm has killed at least 11 people and injured more than 100 others in Mozambique, Africa.

As the spokesman for the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), António de Beleza, said, the storm “Ana” developed wind speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall caused severe damage in the north and center of the South African country with almost 32 million inhabitants. According to INGD, many houses were destroyed and important traffic routes were interrupted, trees and power poles fell.

Parts of southern Africa have been hit by unusually heavy rainfall since last week. More than 100 people have already died in floods in South Africa, Lesotho and Madagascar. The damage to property is in the millions. Southern Africa is currently in the summer cyclone season which can bring severe storms and precipitation through March or April. dpa
