Great heat with temperatures of up to 40 degrees for weeks: the earth in Greece is dry. Fire has an easy time of it.

Athens – Several fires have broken out again in Greece, including a large forest fire on the island of Evia. It could not be brought under control until the afternoon.

The fire broke out in forests near the town of Nea Styra in the southern part of the island for a previously unknown cause and spread quickly due to strong winds. The fire department urged people to stay away from the nearby village of Nimborio. Dozens of helpers are on duty with five fire-fighting aircraft and 23 fire-fighting trains.

There was also a fire on the mainland, including near the small town of Varnavas in the northeast of Athens and near the port city of Volos. For two weeks now, parts of Greece have been very hot with temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees. The Greek civil defense has also issued a fire warning for central Greece and the island of Crete on Sunday. dpa
