Shipwreck off Canada: ten dead recovered so far

There is still no explanation as to why the deep-sea trawler “Villa de Pitanxo” sank in the Atlantic. The number of recovered fatalities continues to rise, and several crew members are still missing.

Madrid/Halfax – After a Spanish fishing trawler sank in the Atlantic off the east coast of Canada, search teams have so far recovered ten dead.

Another 11 of the 24 crew members were still missing, the newspaper “La Voz de Galicia” reported early in the morning, citing the authorities. Only three men had been rescued from a life raft the day before with severe hypothermia. Given the extremely cold water and stormy seas in the region about 450 kilometers east of Newfoundland, there was little chance of survival for the other sailors.

It was initially unknown why the 50-meter-long deep-sea trawler “Villa de Pitanxo” from Galicia in north-west Spain sank. Experts did not rule out that cargo could have slipped in heavy seas and caused the ship to sink, as the newspaper reported. 16 of the crew members were said to be Spanish, five Peruvians and three Ghanaians. dpa
