During a police operation in Frankfurt, shots are fired. Special forces are advancing. A 41-year-old is dead – the LKA is now supposed to clarify the background.

Frankfurt / Main – A 41-year-old was found dead in an apartment in the west of Frankfurt on Tuesday after an attack on a police patrol.

“We assume that the fatal shot was made by the police,” said a police spokeswoman in the afternoon. The exact circumstances still have to be clarified. As always, if someone dies in a police operation involving the use of firearms, a higher authority now determines, in this case the Hessian State Criminal Police Office (LKA).

At 11.15 a.m., an emergency call was received from the apartment building in the Griesheim district, according to the police. There was talk of a possible dangerous situation. When a police patrol arrived on site, they were attacked by the 41-year-old who was armed with a knife and a gun. It came to the “use of firearms by the police”. At first it was unclear who shot and how often – including where exactly the shots came from. A police officer was injured in the course of the operation.

When police officers from a special task force (SEK) then searched the apartment, the attacker was found lifeless there. Another danger to the population can be ruled out. It is not yet known whether there was a dangerous situation in the apartment, a dispute escalated or what the background to the emergency call was. It also remains to be clarified whether the 41-year-old had a live weapon with him, a blank gun or a dummy.

Since the crime scene was near the S-Bahn line and the Frankfurt-Griesheim train station, the train station was also closed during the police operation. The area was cordoned off over a large area. Heavily armed police officers and emergency vehicles stood not only in the cordoned off street, but also in a nearby green area with a cordoned off playground.

An ambulance and an ambulance were parked near the apartment building. As the drizzle set in, some residents who wanted to return to their homes near the crime scene laden with shopping bags became impatient.

In the courtyard of the apartment building, forensics officers were on duty, setting up a tent for work at the entrance to the house. A stroller was partially covered with a plastic sheet.

The immediate crime scene was initially closed. In the afternoon, the Frankfurt police announced on Twitter that the blockage in the area of operation was gradually being lifted. dpa
