Sky México, Grupo Televisa's pay television company, and the German Bundesliga soccer league, agreed to extend the exclusivity of broadcasting Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2 and German Super Cup matches, among others, for four years. The agreement starts from the 2022-23 season.

In a statement, Sky México explained that both parties seek to increase their audience reach, as well as the popularity of the German league. According to the subsidiary company of Televisa, Mexico is currently the third largest market in the Bundesliga league in terms of reach in its own and internationally operated content channels.

Both companies also agreed to implement a distribution strategy that includes both the cable company's established channels and new platforms.

“The German league has seen tremendous growth in terms of live viewing figures in recent years. Industry research indicates that the Bundesliga is the European tournament that has grown the fastest in Mexico," Sky Mexico said in a statement.

The sports segment for cable companies is one of the most relevant because it allows them to retain and increase the subscriber base of this segment, which has been strongly competed by streaming platforms.

In the first quarter of 2022, Sky reported a loss of 8,000 broadband subscriptions to close with 719,223 users in this segment.
