After six years at the helm of Metlife México, Sofía Belmar will leave the general management of the insurer to serve as the new leader of Business Development and Transformation in Latin America.

Metlife said Belmar will be replaced by Mario Valdés, who has more than 25 years of global experience in the insurance industry, including leadership roles in Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Turkey and the Gulf.

Although the announcement was made on Tuesday, the two will be working closely this month to ensure an orderly transition until the changes take effect on July 1.

“Sofía Belmar-Berumen’s leadership and business vision have been critical for MetLife Mexico to become a leading player in the local insurance industry. As a thought leader in the industry, Sofía’s trajectory led her to become the first woman to be elected and reelected as president of the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS) since its foundation in 1964, “the company stated in a statement.

Valdés’ last position was as Director of Designated Markets for EMEA, which includes operations in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Ukraine.
