After the data revealed last Friday in Sony’s financial report , according to which PS4 would have managed to distribute 96.8 million consoles, the Japanese company has also revealed the number of total sales of both hardware and software since the birth of the first Playstation , a whopping 25 years ago .

From these specific data a few curiosities are extracted, such as that the PSP would be the least sold console of all, with “only” 76.4 million units; and that the PS2 is indisputably the champion in the history of the company, slightly exceeding 155 million units.

The hardware sales table would therefore look like this -in the absence of the PSVita data, which they have not wanted to make public-:

  • PS1 – 102.4 million (as of March 31, 2012)
  • PS2 – 155.0 million (as of March 31, 2012)
  • PSP – 76.4 million (as of March 31, 2012)
  • PS3 – 87.4 million (as of March 31, 2017)
  • PS4 – 96.8 million (as of March 31, 2019)

Regarding game sales, Sony has also wanted to offer a few data that help to put each of the machines in context; starting with PS3, which although we see that globally it sold less than its predecessor, it surpasses it in software sales by more than 30 million copies. Still impossible to compete with the second generation of Playstation , which once again stands as absolute queen with its more than 1,500 million copies sold.

This is how the list of software sold would look like:

  • PS1 – 962 million (as of March 31, 2012)
  • PS2 – 1,537 million (as of March 31, 2012)
  • PSP – 331 million (as of March 31, 2012)
  • PS3 – 999.4 million (as of March 31, 2017)
