Sony shares plunge after Microsoft acquisition

Shares of Sony, the giant Japanese manufacturer of electronic products, plummeted almost 10% in the Tokyo market, after it was announced that Microsoft Gaming acquired Activision Blizzard, for 68 thousand 700 million dollars.

According to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the firm's shares registered a drop of 9.45% at 7:00 p.m. in Mexico City, standing at 12,885 yen, from the close of the previous day of 14,230.

The operation carried out by Microsoft is a blow to the Japanese company in the video game market. With the acquisition, the Xbox console takes a significant step ahead of its main competitor Sony's Play Station, which for years has enjoyed a more constant stream of exclusive video games.

Now the creators of Call of Duty, Warcraft, Candy Crush, Tony Hawk, Diablo, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Guitar Hero, StarCraft join their Redmond, Washington-based firm video game vertical.

“As a team, we are on a mission to spread the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet. We all know that games are the most vibrant and dynamic form of entertainment in the world and we have experienced the power of social connection and friendship that games make possible”, detailed the technology company after announcing the purchase.

The demand for video games has increased during the pandemic, as homebound consumers play more to keep themselves entertained.
