The worst storm on record turned streets into torrents. The number of victims is increasing.

Beijing – The death toll in China's Henan Province and its capital, Zhengzhou, has risen to at least 33 following severe flooding.

As the authorities announced on Thursday, at least eight people were still missing. Since last Friday, when the heavy rains began, at least 376,000 people in the province have been brought from danger areas to safety.

After the heaviest rainfall in the region since weather records began, at least 25 people were killed in Zhengzhou alone, according to official information. Videos could be seen how in the nine-million-metropolis on Tuesday multi-lane roads had partly turned into raging rivers. Cars swam in the water. The masses of water also flooded the subway, where hundreds of people were temporarily trapped in trains and tunnels, as reported by the state media and eyewitnesses. dpa
