Student Oscars: Gold for Nils Keller from Munich

For the first time, US and international productions competed against each other at the Student Academy Awards – instead of in separate categories. There were three awards for up-and-coming directors from Germany.

Los Angeles – Three German films were also honored at this year’s Student Academy Awards. The up-and-coming directors accepted the student Oscars at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

In the “Narrative” category, the gold award went to Nils Keller and his film “Almost Home”. In it, the 31-year-old tells a mother-son conflict that takes place in space. Keller represented the Munich University of Television and Film (HFF) at the award ceremony.

“We were short on money, an ongoing pandemic, and we wanted — no, we had to — build a full-size walk-in spacecraft. We needed a lot of visual effects. So many things could have gone wrong,” said the director in his acceptance speech.

Another production by the Munich HFF won the silver award in this category. The director Welf Reinhart (27) was awarded for his film “Eigenheim”, which is about an elderly couple and an impending eviction.

Another German production, the stop-motion film “Laika & Nemo”, received an award at the Student Academy Awards: the film by Jan Gadermann and Sebastian Gadow (Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf) received the silver award in the “Animation” category. .

A total of 14 students from all over the world were chosen at the award ceremony. For the first time, US and international productions competed against each other instead of in separate categories. dpa
