Summer trends 2021: Mochi, pink drink, Raffaello ice cream

This summer will be the second with Corona – but possibly looser and tastier. A trend outlook – with little pandemic, but a panorama of new phenomena such as mochi ice cream and coconut praline ice cream on a stick.

Berlin (dpa) – Of course, many just want to enjoy the classics of the warm season in summer: beer garden, lake, barbecue, vanilla ice cream, chocolate, stracciatella, Aperol Spritz, gin and tonic. Last year, biscuit dough for spooning and Dalgona Coffee were new mass phenomena.

What do you have to know this year to be up to date? A selection of summer trends for 2021.

– EISDIELEN: “Previously 20 Pfennig, today 5 Marks”, whispers Rainald Grebe in the song “Eis” on his album “Popmusik”. The cult of eating ice cream can be annoying. Grebe therefore targets particularly hip “ice cream dealers” and exaggerates the weirdness of some varieties: “Matcha Earl Gray”, “Horse Chestnut Rosemary”, “Horse Meat Liquorice,” Tannenzäpfle Beer Sorbet “,” Activated Charcoal Ice Cream with Liquid Nitrogen ” . But one thing is also clear: every year, new flavors are proclaimed a trend. In 2021, the Uniteis association named the fruity-hot “Mango-Chili” ice cream of the year.

– REFRIGERATED SHELVES: The Mövenpick brand launched “Black Currant Yoghurt” as “Our Ice Cream of the Year”. And with Raffaello (coconut almond praline) and Rocher (praline with waffle, nougat cream and hazelnut), Ferrero has launched two of its popular sweets as popsicles. The well-known shortage of the Italian company leaves many ice cream racks quickly empty.

– SWEET: “Waffle and Mochi” is the name of a Netflix children’s cookery show starring Michelle Obama. Mochi is a small ball of rice flour dough. The mochi ice cream “Little Moons” has also been available in Germany since last year. It combines Japanese and Italian dessert cuisine. Soft, chewy rice dough encases ice cream. The gluten-free bite-off ice cream scoops can be found in more and more supermarkets.

– DELIVERY SERVICES: The pandemic has given delivery services a huge boost. Lieferando, the market leader in food delivery, is now expanding its business to include food delivery. In some metropolises there is already competition raging as to who can bring the goods to convenient city dwellers the fastest. Services such as Gorillas and Flink send bicycle couriers through the streets and promise – thanks to small warehouses in the city centers – to deliver fruit or grilled food within ten minutes. The Dax group Delivery Hero now wants to get involved again. In summer 2021 there will be more and more apps that deliver ready-made meals and supermarket goods.

– SUN PROTECTION: If you want to unpack your Corona kilos at all and dare to go into the sun half-naked, you should apply some lotion. The Stiftung Warentest recently determined that the price is by no means decisive for the quality of sun creams: The drugstore chain dm (“Sundance Sun Milk”) made it to number one. Rossmann (“Sunozon Sonnenmilch”), Edeka (“Elkos Sun Sonnenmilch”) and Aldi (“Ombra Sun Ultra Sensitiv Sonnencreme”) were among the leaders.

– PINK DRINK: Many users share the bright pink drink on TikTok and Instagram, which is an eye-catcher. The recipe for the pink drink is simple. Ice cubes, frozen berries (most likely strawberries, but also raspberries or blackberries), then three-quarters of hibiscus flower tea, possibly even hibiscus flower syrup, and then add the cow’s milk alternative coconut drink.

– ALCOHOL: The Mint Julep is one of the “trend drinks of the year” for the magazine “Gala”. He’s making a well-deserved comeback. Consists of just a few ingredients: whiskey, sugar syrup, mint. Connoisseurs drink the cocktail in proper style from an ice-cold silver cup.

– GRILL: In the Corona period when restaurants were not open, many people bought new kitchen appliances. After the Thermomix or hot air fryer hype, contact grills are the order of the day in 2021, such as the Tefal Optigrill. With sensors and lights, it shows when burgers, sandwiches, sausages or fish are exactly right. With beef steak, whether it is bloody, medium or well done. With the blinking and beeping, the grill feels like being in a science fiction spaceship.

– FASHION: “Vogue” sees the fashion trends for this summer as ultra-short mini skirts, (maritime) fishnet looks, white dresses, floral patterns and, as before, the bralet. For men, neon yellow, for example, but also pastel colors and wide trousers are recommended, as well as Bermuda shorts, of course: Gradually, the shorts have become longer and wider again. “Above the knee” is currently the most exciting length that you should currently wear. “

– FRAGRANCE: The luxury industry likes to play with longings, and in the limited Corona time they are mainly when traveling. A new unisex perfume from Louis Vuitton is called “On The Beach” and tries to olfactorily capture the feeling of sun on the skin and sand between the toes with citrus yuzu, neroli from bitter orange, thyme and rosemary. The Dior brand is dedicating an equally expensive fragrance to a magical place in the south of France: the “Eden-Roc” near Cannes. 90 years ago Erika Mann and Klaus Mann considered the luxury hotel with a large garden and rock pool to be the best place on the Côte d’Azur in their “Book of the Riviera”.
