A newly formed coalition of tech companies on Tuesday requested $ 50 billion in aid from the US government to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing amid growing chip shortages.
The Coalition of Semiconductors in the United States, which includes giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, AT&T, Verizon and dozens of other firms, said it is seeking funding for the “CHIPS for America Act,” a law that was passed by the legislators earlier this year but still lacks allocated funds.

The group urged Congress to allocate funds for research and manufacturing, calling the effort essential to economic and national security.
“Semiconductors are the brain of the systems and technologies that enable America’s economic growth , national security, digital infrastructure, and global technology leadership,” said John Neuffer, president and CEO of the Semiconductor Industry Association. , whose member companies are part of the coalition.
“The leaders of a wide range of critical sectors of the American economy, as well as a large and bipartisan group of legislators in Washington, recognize the essential role of semiconductors in the current and future strength of the United States.”
The semiconductor shortage threatens to affect a variety of economic sectors, from mobile phones and video game consoles to automobiles .
The situation has deepened a supply crisis as the economy emerges from the slowdown produced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To address this problem in the short term, the government must refrain from intervening while the industry works to correct the current imbalance between supply and demand that is causing the shortage,” the coalition said in a letter to congressional leaders.
“But in the longer term, strong funding from the CHIPS Act would help the United States build the additional capacity needed to have stronger supply chains that ensure critical technologies are there when we need them,” he added.
