With the presentation of the Teddy Awards, the best queer films are to be honored again this year. The event will be broadcast on the internet. There won’t be a big party.

Berlin – The presentation of the Teddy Awards at the Berlinale is to take place this year without a party and with invited guests. The festival’s best queer films will be honored on February 18 at Berlin’s Volksbühne.

The event will be broadcast on the Internet, as the theater announced on Tuesday. Before the pandemic, the Teddy Award, with 1,500 guests, was one of the biggest parties at the Berlinale and a meeting place for the gay and lesbian scene. Among the winners were film greats such as Tilda Swinton, Pedro Almodóvar, Helmut Berger, Udo Kier and Ulrike Ottinger.

The prize has been awarded at the Berlin International Film Festival for 36 years. It benefits films and people “that communicate topics related to social diversity and contribute to more tolerance, acceptance, solidarity and equality in society”.

According to the organizers, the Teddy is the oldest and most important queer film award in the world. According to Duden, “queer” is a term that describes a different gender identity than the socially widespread heterosexual norm. dpa
