Following the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban have taken control of the country. This weekend they have taken Kabul, the capital of the country and the main victims are women and girls due to the imposition of ‘sharia’ or Islamic law. These are the norms that the Taliban impose on women in Afghanistan .

  1. Women are completely prohibited from working outside the home. Only a few female doctors and nurses are allowed to work in certain Kabul hospitals.

  4. Male doctors cannot treat women.
  5. Women cannot study in schools, universities or any educational institution.

  7. Women who do not dress according to the rules of the Taliban or are not accompanied by their “guardian” can be whipped and verbally abused in public.
  8. Spanking is the punishment for women who show their ankles.
  9. Public stoning of women accused of having sexual relations outside of marriage.
  10. The use of cosmetics is prohibited. Many women have had their fingers amputated for wearing painted nails.
  11. Women are forbidden to speak or shake hands with any man other than their ‘guardian’.
  12. Prohibition of laughing out loud as no stranger has to hear the female voice.
  13. Women are not allowed to wear high heels because they produce sound when walking and a man cannot hear a woman’s footsteps.
  14. Women cannot get into a taxi without their “guardian.”
  15. They are prohibited from having a presence on radio, television and public meetings.
  16. They are not allowed to practice any sports, as well as to enter any sports club.
  17. Women cannot ride motorcycles or bicycles.
  18. Wearing brightly colored garments is prohibited.
  19. Prohibition of women from gathering for recreational purposes at festivals.
  20. Women are not allowed to wash clothes in public squares or in rivers.
  21. The entire nomenclature of streets and squares should be modified with the word “woman”.
  22. Women are prohibited from looking out onto the balconies of their houses.

  24. Tailors cannot measure women and sew women’s clothing.
  25. Women cannot access public toilets.
