Around the world there are many very remote inhabited islands . They are thousands of kilometers away from the nearest city, so, of course, living in them is not easy.
Tristán de Acuña (United Kingdom)
Discovered at the beginning of the 16th century by the Portuguese navigator Tristán de Acuña, it is located in the South Atlantic. The closest inhabited place is the island of Santa Elena, located 2,173 kilometers to the north . Access to the island is a practically impossible mission due to its remoteness and because it is surrounded by large cliffs, some of them more than 600 meters high.
In its day, an attempt was made to build an airport to improve accessibility, but it was impossible since the terrain is very steep. Therefore, the only way to get on and off the island is by boat . Every two months a boat leaves for Cape Town, and the trip lasts a week.
Isla Canton (Kiribati)
One of the most remote inhabited islands in the world is Kanton, belonging to the Republic of Kiribati. It is an atoll located in the Pacific Ocean, halfway between Fiji and Hawaii .
When the Americans and the British left Kanton Island in the mid-20th century, it was uninhabited. Later, after the independence of Kiribati, some people relocated there .
It is located 1,760 kilometers from the capital of Kiribati, the closest inhabited place . The curious thing of all is that it has a large airstrip that the Americans built in World War II, but it is abandoned.
North Sentinel Island (India)
This island is not inaccessible due to its remoteness since it is located a few miles from the big island of Andaman. The reason why access to it is impossible has to do with its inhabitants: they are aborigines who attack anyone who dares to disembark on its shores .
Hardly anything is known about them, but what is clear is that they continue to live in prehistory. On November 16, 2018, they murdered a US citizen who tried to contact them . As soon as he reached the coast, a multitude of arrows rained down on him, and then the aborigines dragged his body into the interior of the island, as reported by the fishermen who took him there.
