The 9 best breweries to visit in Miami

0

Miami is known for nights, pristine beaches, loud music, and warm, sparkling waters, but there’s a new kid on the block who makes a name for himself quickly. Just five years ago, “beer” was not a word often spoken in the Magic City. Now, with breweries popping up in different neighborhoods every few months, Miami has become a serious contender on the craft beer scene. And what happens when you are new to the game? There is room for experimentation when it comes to distinctive flavors and off the beaten track locations. Here are nine of our favorites so far.

Opened in 1995, Abbey is a Miami Beach establishment, a popular hangout for tourists and loved by locals. Everything South Beach isn’t (in a good way), this cozy little dark bar offers an intimate experience and has a full liquor bar and food menu, plus its house ales and guest draft beers.

This one is also special because, like the Abbey, it has been open for 23 years. The self-proclaimed “oldest and best brewpub” in Miami, Titanic has won multiple awards over the decades at competitions such as the Great American Beer Festival and the New Times International Beer Festival. The Coral Gables Brewery prides itself on having six signature drafts ranging from a light pilsner to seven percent ABV IPA.

You’ll find some of the best seasonal and limited edition beers in Miami at Wynwood Brewing Co. The 15-barrel family-owned brewery takes its creations seriously and promises to create a work of art in every glass. It is also Wynwood’s first craft brewery, so the owners have gone out of their way to stay authentic and really elevate the community by hiring locally and offering weekly specials and discounts for locals, college students, and those working in the service industry. They also have a special sweet ladies night.

Food trucks are in rotation here and in conjunction with the neighborhood’s monthly Art Walk, Wynwood Brewing features a pop-up art gallery. All pieces, created by local artists, of course, are available for sale throughout the month with proceeds going directly to the artists.

What started as Schnebly Winery, the only winery in Miami, located on a vast farm property, has expanded to include a brewery right next door. Both Schnebly and Miami Brewing Company use a blend of fruits, spices, and herbs for unique South Florida flavors that are so tropical. Plan to spend the day here, or at least a few good hours; you can order some savory snacks in the tasting room, play pool, and watch a sporting event on the big projector screen.

Concrete Beach, another Wynwood brewery, began brewing in 2015, opened its Social Hall shortly after, and offers free tours seven days a week. The indoor / outdoor space has some great flavors, including the 6.2 percent ABV Rosé Ale (rosé all day!) And the Pisco Sour Berliner, inspired by the classic Peruvian Pisco cocktail. Like Wynwood Brewing, Concrete Beach supports the arts and local community organizations. The brewery houses food vendors on an ever-changing schedule, so check their website or give them a call if you have questions about what’s on the menu.

There is a very apparent presidential issue here, but we don’t care. This Bird Road Arts District brewery has thousands of pennies taped to the top of the bar, a mural of Abraham Lincoln on a brick wall, and a framed portrait of the eponymous American President above a urinal in the men’s room.

Lincoln’s Beard hosts live music acts on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and is the ideal place for any day of the week if you are in the mood for some good beers and an even better time. This brewery separates its beers into three categories: always, often, and sometimes. Try Lincoln’s Best Sparkling Ale, a crisp and refreshing 5.5 percent ABV; Rumor has it that a few sips will improve your karaoke skills exponentially.

West Kendall’s Spanish Marie is a Prohibition-era craft brewery, a newcomer to the Miami beer world as of May 2018. The beautifully decorated and inviting space doesn’t look like your typical brewery, with hanging plants and 1920s-style tchotchkes, but we’ll take it

Spanish Marie hosts movie nights and their Speakeasy Menu has some of the most interesting beers we’ve heard so far, including a host of beers (the Guava-infused Era de Guayaba beer, the Grapefruit Crates grapefruit cream beer and the cleverly named I like you, but I’m Chai, to name a few) and a French vanilla coffee porter. Spanish Marie also offers guest beers from Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Co., as well as a few other independent sources from California, Alaska, and St. Petersburg, FL.

At Nightlife Brewing, it’s all about the stories told and history made while enjoying a fantastic local beer. This brewery is great because it’s right outside of Marlins Park, Miami’s ballpark, so it’s the perfect place to stop and pre-game or recap / drink your penalties after a game. But you don’t have to be a sports fanatic to drink. This place is open year-round and features seasonal cans like Flight to Freedom, a strong golden beer probably named after Cubans who escaped to Miami in the 1960s and ’70s, and Thunderbird beer.

A massive (and we mean a massive 25,000 square feet!) Of space in the middle of nowhere, also known as the Doral warehouse district, Tank Brewing Co. it’s the perfect place to host an event or just stop for a couple of beers before heading back to the airport. Book a tour or try some of the 16 locally-named draft beers, including Freedom Tower or El Farito (which translates to “the little lighthouse”).

The Tank also hosts cigar nights, live music, and charity events like South Florida’s first 5k craft beer race, benefiting local organizations. If you’re in Miami for a long time (and a good time) and looking to get involved in the community, this might be the brewery for you.
