When we met Kyle for our walk in Florence, he took us to his favorite ice cream parlor, Gelateria La Carraia. They serve excellent homemade ice cream in a wide variety of flavors. My cone with two flavors costs one euro (2008). Gelateria La Carraia is located in Piazza N. Sauro, near Ponte Carraia, in the Oltrano area (across the river). They also have another store, Gelateria La Carraia 2, in Via de ‘Benci 24 / r.

Kristin Stasiowski, a Context Florence tour guide, took me to her favorite Florence ice cream shop, Gelateria dei Neri. The little shop has artisan ice cream in a variety of flavors, some of them unusual, and also makes soy-based sorbet and gelato. My favorite was the chocolate and the orange. Gelateria dei Neri is in Via dei Neri 20-22, towards the center from the river and Ponte alla Grazie.

Vestri is an artisanal chocolate shop with unsurprisingly excellent chocolate ice cream. They have only a few flavors, but they are very good, they did the old-fashioned style and were kept in metal jars instead of being exposed in a glass box. Vestri is a small shop north of Piazza Santa Croce on Borgo degli Albizi 11r.

L’Angolo del Gelato makes a good stop to get in or out of Florence if you arrive by train or bus. L’Angolo del Gelato is in a corner of Piazza Santa Maria Novella so you can admire the church while eating your ice cream. It’s inexpensive and they have some interesting flavors, like my favorite, cinnamon.

Grom says they make “Il Gelato Come Una Volta”, an Italian ice cream as it was once made. They use high-quality ingredients and have a long list of flavors with additional flavors of the month. Grom is in the Piazza del Duomo on via del Campanile at the corner of via delle Oche. It opens every day at 10:30 am and closes at midnight during the summer season and at 11 pm during the winter season. This very popular chain can also be found in other cities in northern Italy and Perugia, as well as Paris, Tokyo, and New York.
