They have gone on a romantic vacation together and it seems the time has come for a marriage proposal. But your budget hotel restaurant may not be the place to ask the most important question of your life. Or maybe you are at home here in the UK, but your flat doesn’t seem intimate enough.

Choose a romantic restaurant. In 2016, Clos Maggiore, near London’s Covent Garden, once again added the Harden’s UK Restaurant Survey accolade as the most romantic restaurant in London to its collection of other romantic awards. Architectural Digest went even further, naming it the world’s most romantic restaurant in 2016.

Some others that rank high in the romance department include:

  • The Witchery by the Castle in Edinburgh, which also has theatrically Gothic rooms for retreating after dinner.
  • Manoir aux Quat ‘Saisons by Raymond Blanc, near Oxford (also with rooms and beautiful gardens)
  • The Waterside Inn in Bray, where you can enjoy river views or ask questions about champagne and appetizers on the restaurant’s sweet little riverboat (ask in advance for pricing and availability)

There is something tremendously romantic about looking at the whole world together from a very high place. But despite the Sleepless in Seattle image of places like the top of the Empire State Building, most of the very tall observation points – like London’s Shard or Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower – are likely to be filled with others. people struggling to see and tuck their cameras over your shoulder.

For a really special experience, you could hire a capsule on the London Eye for the two of you… almost. You also have to share with a host pouring your champagne. But each capsule is actually large enough for twenty people, so the host undoubtedly practices to maintain a discreet distance. The experience is called Cupid’s Capsule and includes fancy champagne, chocolates, and a rose. As of publication, the Cupid capsule costs £ 425.

If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, try traveling on the Emirates Airline, London’s cable car that crosses the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks. Go in the evening and you’ll enjoy a 10-minute ride, 300 feet above the Thames. During the day, you will only have about five minutes to ask this question. You’ll probably have to share the moment because each car seats eight passengers, but if you’re going at a slow time of day and staying at the right time, you should be able to take a car just for the two of you.

Palladian Bridges, very fashionable garden ornaments of the 18th century, were always designed for romantic encounters, as places to take refuge from prying eyes.

There are only four of these lovely, romantic bridges left in the world and three of them are in England (the fourth is in St. Petersburg, Russia). If you can expect warmer weather, you can ask the question after April 14 at the Palladian Bridge at Wilton House, the home of the Earls of Pembroke in Wiltshire since 1540. But if you want to make the most of Valentine’s Day, head over to to the beautiful Palladian bridges in Prior Park near Bath or Stowe Landscape Garden in Buckinghamshire. Both are owned by the National Trust and the gardens are open to visitors throughout the year.

The Lake District inspired the romantic poets of the 19th century; Just think of Wordsworth’s nodding narcissus field. He made his home at Dove Cottage in English Lakes.

Looking for modern inspiration, you could emulate Bill Clinton. He proposed to Hillary next to Ennerdale Water, the westernmost lake in the Lake District. But, if you’re thinking about the Clintons, be prepared for a maybe instead of a yes . According to Bill, she turned him down. According to Hillary, she said, “Not yet.”

All kinds of things have been said about Shakespeare’s marriage to older woman Anne Hathaway, possibly at a shotgun wedding. However, they were married for 34 years and she bore him three children, two of whom survived to adulthood. He returned to her in Stratford-upon-Avon when he retired from the theater. When she died, seven years after Shakespeare, she was buried next to him.

His thatched-roof cottage on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon, where he was born and raised, is arguably one of the most romantic settings in England. The house itself is full of other visitors, but it is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Small benches overlooking the cottage are perfectly placed for a marriage proposal.

Bluebells that carpet a forest floor are a particularly British sight, especially in England and Wales, as there are no natural bluebells in Scotland. Fifty percent of the world’s bluebells are in the UK.

The symbolism of the bell is apt for a marriage proposal. The flower represents constancy and may be the origin of the “blue something” traditionally used by brides. Snowdrops on a forest floor are also a sign of an ancient forest.

Propose in May when the bluebells are at their best on these National Trust sites:

  • Nymans and West Sussex
  • Castillo Sissinghurst and Kent
  • Lanhydrock and Cornwall
