Fernando Alonso put an end to the hegemony of Michael Schumacher, who had won the last five championships, winning the World Cup in 2005. This is something that reconciled fans with Formula 1. Taking advantage of the pull, that same year, the FIA gave the go-ahead to the idea of merging motorsport with football in what was called the Superleague Formula. Teams such as Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla participated in this Super League. The Formula Superleague would not start until 2008, and it was a competition of single-seaters with a V12 engine painted in the colors of several of the best teams in the world. Like the Superliga chaired by Florentino Pérez, the Superleague became the European motorsport competition that offered the highest economic prize. One million euros for the champions, half a million for the runners-up and 250,000 euros for the third parties. In addition, the Superleague introduced important new features that made racing more attractive. For example, the inverted grills, an idea that has been trying to translate into Formula 1 for some time. Another attraction of this Super League was that all the participating cars were identical. Therefore, the competition rewarded the skills and abilities of each driver, something for which Formula 1 is sometimes criticized. The Superleague was canceled in 2011 when only two races had been contested. The teams participating in the Formula 1 Super League represented Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla to Spain in this Super League.The other European clubs that participated in the Superleague Formula were Milan, Sparta from Prague, Rome, Borussia Dortmund, Basel, Midtjylland, Porto, Galatasaray, Girondins de Bordeaux, Liverpool, Olympiakos, Olympique de Lyon, PSV, Rangers, Anderlecht, Sporting de Lisbon and Tottenham. For their part, representing America Flamengo and Corinthians; and to Asia, Al Ain and Beijing Guoan. Precisely, this last team was the first winner of the Super League in 2008. Beijing Guoan beat PSV and Milan, who were second and third respectively. Adrián Vallés won with Liverpool In 2009 the champion was the Spanish Adrián Vallés, who led Liverpool to the top. Tottenham and Basel were second and third in that edition. For their part, Anderlech won in 2010, years in which Tottenham and Basel would once again be runners-up and third respectively. In 2012 some clubs gave up their places to national teams and Australia beat Japan and Luxembourg. In addition to these three countries, Brazil, China, the Netherlands, England and New Zealand participated. The Superleague Formula, which was played entirely on European soil, was held in Spain. In 2008 it was raced in Jerez, while in 2009 the World Championship was decided at Jarama, where the last two races were held. In 2010 she raced again at Jarama, although in this edition the World Cup was decided at the Navarra Circuit.María de Villota was the first woman to compete in the SuperleagueWith regard to Atlético de Madrid, she joined the Superliga in the second race of 2008 with Andy Soucek, who had raced the first two for Corinthians, as a driver.In 2009 Ho-Pin Tung, despite having achieved a second place in the fourth race, was relieved by María de Villota from the seventh. In 2012, María de Villota played one race with Atlético de Madrid and Andy Soucek the other.Unlike Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla did have been in the Superleague Formula from the first race. What’s more, he won this one through the Spanish Borja García. The Andalusian team did not participate in the first two races of 2009. They did in the third, where Esteban Guerrieri drove for Sevilla, while Sebastien Bourdais ran the rest. The Frenchman achieved a victory, two second places and a third. Sevilla won a race again in 2010 through Marcos Martínez, who was their driver during that year. On the contrary, the Seville team did not compete in 2011, the year in which they gave up their place to a national team.
