The election result … in tweets

twitter-elecciones During the electoral campaign of the last legislative elections on November 20, more than 2.7 million tweets were generated, making it the most tweeted campaign in history. The highest peak of tweets was obtained on the day of face-to-face between the leaders of the two main parties.

Approximately 110 tweets per minute have been launched during this election campaign . This is the data extracted from the study carried out by the Barcelona Media technology center, which has analyzed both the number of tweets related to the elections and the segmentation by political parties, their dilation over time, retweets, etc.

For example, during the debate between Mariano Rajoy and Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, more than 500,000 tweets were generated, while on the day of the elections it was slightly lower, exceeding 400,000 but without reaching half a million.

Analyzing the tweets related to the different parties and comparing them between the reflection day and the 20N, it is observed that in the case of CiU and UPyD, the number of tweets multiplied by ten while in the case of BNG, IU and ERC, the number of tweets only doubled.

The election result also affected the number of party-related tweets. While the PP registered a peak of activity after its victory, the PSOE registered a fall .

The analysis also reveals a curious conclusion: the Basque nationalist parties barely used Twitter to communicate: Amaiur and PNV had a total count of less than 2,000 tweets.

In relation to retweets, the broad “winner” in this regard was Unión Progreso y Democracia (@UPyD) with more than 15,000 retweets. This account was followed by other parties such as Izquierda Unida (@iunida) with 10,000, @conRubalcaba with 8,000 and @marianorajoy with 7,000 retweets
