Accidents in the motorcycling training categories have hit the riders hard this year, reaching the figure of three deaths, Jason Dupasquier , Hugo Millán and Dean Berta Viñales , in addition to some serious accidents that, fortunately, resulted only in the spectacular images.

Among the latter, the maneuver that the Turkish Deniz Oncu carried out on the straight of the Austin Circuit, in the last Moto3 race held there, was the final straw that exceeded the patience of Race Direction , which punished the young rider with two races of sanction.

In parallel, the International Federation (FIM) and Dorna are working on a series of measures to try to limit the risks in small classes, and this Friday in Misano some news has been announced, including the increase in the minimum age to be able to participate in the competitions organized under the umbrella of the FIM, such as the MotoGP World Championship, a measure that some riders in the queen class demanded after the accident in Austin, a month ago. Another measure will be to limit the number of pilots participating in the races.

In the note made public by the FIM and Dorna, it is established that from 2022, the four Talent Cup competitions will limit the minimum age to participate in Moto3 to 13 years, with a maximum of 30 riders on the grid.

The minimum age for competitors in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup will be raised to 14 years, while the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship at the FIM CEV Repsol will see the minimum age limit at 15, with a maximum of 32 competitors in every race.

From 2023 onwards, the proposal is to further increase the age limits as follows: A minimum age of 14 must apply to all races on any Grand Prix-type circuit.

The minimum age for competitors in any class in the FIM MotoGP World Championship will be raised to 18 years , including for Moto3 and Moto2, now limited to 16 years.

In addition to all these new limitations, the FIM has announced that it will be mandatory to equip the maximum safety measures in the riders’ equipment, and other measures in search of the greatest possible safety for the riders.
