The first anatomical atlas of the gorilla

atlas-gorilaThe Museum of Anatomy of the University of Valladolid (UVA) has collaborated with the University of Barcelona (UB) and the George Washington University, in the USA, to elaboratethe world’s first atlas with images of gorilla skeletal and muscle dissections.

The recently published atlas is the first with photographs since, as Francisco Pastor, director of the museum, explains, disposing of these animals for scientific study is not easy in other countries. The work has a description part where the muscles and bones of primates are detailed, specifically aspects such as “the situation, the weights or the measures”, while the atlas itself is in the back and “is divided in planes of the various areas such as the head, the thorax or the extremities “.

To carry out the work, calledPhotographic and Descriptive Musculoskeletal Atlas of the Gorilla, three gorillas have been used, all of them of the same species,? the most common in zoos, the coastal gorilla ?, specifies the expert. The collaboration of the Anatomical Museum of the UVA has been of great importance, since it has contributed both the photographs that appear in the work and the work of dissecting the gorillas and the detailed study of each dissected part. In addition, the publication has been promoted by scientist Bernard Wood, an “eminence” in anthropology.

The collaboration has been so fruitful for both institutions that they are already working on the development ofanother atlas about the gibbon, and announce that in the future they plan to elaborate another two about the chimpanzee and the orangutan.
