The first bearded vulture is born in the Picos de Europa since its extinction

0

Since the extinction of the bearded vulture ( Gypaetus barbatus ) in the Picos de Europa National Park, approximately seven decades ago, there had been no chick hatching. Up to now.

Fortunately, a team of technicians from the Bearded Vulture Conservation Foundation and the Picos de Europa National Park nursery have confirmed its birth , which represents a crucial leap in its survival, as this species had been extinct since 1956.

The parents of the newborn chick are two adult specimens, called Deva (10-year-old female) and Casanova (13-year-old male), together since 2014, who are already making the first fattening of their young.

The bearded vulture is declared an endangered species and the Pyrenean population is home to 85% of the remaining bearded vultures in all of Europe. Expanding its range will reduce the risk of extinction for this species.
