To establish this ideal starting grid, we have taken into consideration the results in qualifying (taking into account the Friday sessions during the sprint races) and not the positions on the 22 grids of the season.

This makes it possible to take into account the positions obtained by the drivers on Saturday before the application of any penalties on Sunday.

However, it is not an exact science: any driver who knows in advance that he will have to penalize does not face qualifying in the same conditions and with the aim of being as high as possible, since they often focus their work on the race pace. Sometimes he only makes one lap away from his potential, or even none at all (like Max Verstappen in Sochi, for example).

Another clarification that the regulations take into account: when a driver has not set a time in Q1 , for whatever reason, he is considered unclassified and this session does not enter his average. On the other hand, if a driver has not been able to set a time in Q2 or Q3 , he is still classified and the session, therefore, enters his average. Apart from these considerations, this is a purely statistical exercise.
