The Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi received the award for the best international feature film.

Two trophies went to the film “Coda” by US director Sian Heder about a girl who grew up as a child of deaf parents. The British Emilia Jones (19) won as a young actress, the deaf US actor Troy Kotsur (53) was named best supporting actor.

“Squid Game” awarded in the TV division

The Japanese drama “Drive My Car”, with which Ryusuke Hamaguchi filmed a short story by Haruki Murakami, was honored as best international film. The Netflix hit “Squid Game”, a brutal, socially critical South Korean thriller series, won best new series in the TV division.

The Gotham Awards, which have been presented since 1991, are the prelude to the trophy season, which ends with the Academy Awards at the end of March. The awards are determined by a group of filmmakers and critics. Previous winners, who later also won Oscars, include films such as “Moonlight”, “Spotlight”, “Birdman” and, most recently, “Nomadland”. dpa
