The names of "Frozen", fashionable in the United Kingdom

“Frozen” is a beautiful cartoon movie, and we have talked about it on several occasions. Today we do it because the names “Frozen” are fashionable in the UK and there are now many more children named Elsa or Hans.

Specifically, the name of one of the protagonists of the film, Elsa, has managed for the first time to be among the 100 most popular names by achieving an increase of 34%. Other names pertaining to the film that are much more common in the records in recent months are Kristoff (40%), Hans (40%) and Sven (41%).

The smallest increases are in the names of Anna and Olaf, although for very different reasons. In the case of the female protagonist, because Anna is already a very common name in the country (it has only increased by 4%) and in the case of Olaf (by 4%), perhaps because the friendly snowman is a bit reckless. Although, curiously, the name that has registered the most increase is that of the reindeer, Sven.

I would definitely stick with Elsa , a name that seems to have a compound origin, a combination of Elisa and Elizabet, considered the German variant of Elisa. A possible etymology of the Hebrew Elyasa is also pointed out: ‘God helps’.

We have seen on the blog other cases of names that became fashionable for television series or movies, such as “Game of Thrones” or “Twilight” and there really are names that sound more or less good to us. The bad comes when bad taste dyes that fashion …

But the fact that the names of “Frozen” are fashionable in the United Kingdom (and surely in many other countries) is just one more example that we let ourselves be influenced by those successes that become cultural phenomena and that soon we will have other similar examples.
