The old and new ideas that Mercedes brings to the Hungarian GP

The high-downforce nature of the Hungaroring circuit means the German team not only has new parts on its W13, but has also opted to fit older elements to help meet Mercedes’ needs.

That starts at the front of the car, as the Silver Arrows have used a heavier front wing, after trimming some upper parts where necessary to help reduce downforce and drag.

This helps to better balance the car, as the German team has gone back to the higher load setting on the rear wing, albeit with some modifications for this race, in order to get the best out of it [circled, in the second image, below].

Mercedes has also turned to another old favorite in Hungary, in that they have returned to the pair of boomerang-shaped winglets on the W13’s Halo . These parts have been a staple for many teams in this area of the car since 2018, as they help control the flow of air going over the safety device, thus making it stay together, while also improving it while transmitting. towards the rear.

The Brackley-based outfit used a similar set-up throughout last season, but had opted not to fit these wings for the first half of the year, perhaps because they were unable to see the real benefit of this on the original aerodynamics.
