The Omicron variant arrives in Antarctica

0

The Omicron variant has reached the ends of the planet. Most of the scientists at the Belgian polar station Princess Elisabeth, who are located in Antarctica, are infected by the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, according to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir. All of them are isolated.

16 of the 25 crew members contracted the virus despite the fact that all facility staff members were vaccinated (they had received at least two doses of the vaccine) and all tested negative before joining the station. However, the first positive cases were reported seven days after the arrival of some new crew members.

Princess Elizabeth is a polar station run by the International Polar Association and, although none of those infected suffers from serious disease, it is new proof that this variant is capable of reaching the most remote place on Earth.

This variant is very contagious, but Ómicron is also capable of infecting many more people with good defenses, and even being vaccinated, compared to the delta variant.
