The tire keys for the 2022 F1 Monaco GP

Formula 1 is preparing to carry out the first double of races of the European season. After the Spanish Grand Prix, the Gran Circo is preparing to compete in the Monaco Grand Prix, the seventh round of the course.

For the traditional event to be held in Monte Carlo, Pirelli will carry the following compounds:

  • C3 (the hardest, white in color)
  • C4 (middle, yellow)
  • C5 (the soft one, red in color)

This mix includes the three softest compounds in Pirelli’s 2022 range, with C1 being the hardest and C5 being the softest.

  • One week after using the hardest tires in the range for the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli has decided to choose the softest for one of Formula 1’s most historic circuits. C3 will be hard, C4 will be medium. and the C5 will be the soft one.
  • Like the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya , Monaco is a track that is very familiar to the teams. In fact, it is one of only three circuits still on the calendar from those that were in the inaugural season of Formula 1 in 1950. However, unlike the other two, Spa and Silverstone, its layout has not changed from significant way.
  • Monaco stands out for having the lowest average speed of any circuit, as well as few run-offs, making overtaking notoriously difficult.
  •  Due to the slippery tarmac of the local roads that make up the track, (which are opened to traffic each afternoon) and the low speeds achieved, tires are not usually affected, and wear and degradation is minimal, but there is a high degree of evolution of the track every day. For these reasons, the one-stop strategy is usually the norm at Monaco, but there is a fairly wide pit stop window, and this timing can be influenced by the safety cars, which come into action very often at this circuit. due to limited loopholes.
  • At Monaco, the single-seaters adopt a special high-downforce setup to maximize low-speed grip, with grip guaranteed mechanically by the tires and aerodynamically by the downforce. This grand prix is obviously the debut in Monaco of the new generation of Formula 1 cars with 18-inch tyres, so the teams will have to understand how they react in these unique conditions, also bearing in mind that the weather in the Mediterranean coastline is sometimes difficult to predict at this time of year.

Pirelli representative Mario Isola had some comments on the tyres: “Monaco is often described as one of the most unpredictable races of the year, but the truth is that qualifying takes on special importance as track position is crucial in this circuit”.

“Consequently, understanding how to get the most out of the C5’s softer compound, which has only been taken to the Australian Grand Prix so far this year, will be a key aspect of free practice.”

“Since there is no longer the rule that forced the top 10 drivers to start the race with the tires they had passed Q2 on, we could see different strategies this year.”

“Some drivers might choose harder compounds at the start to do a long first stint, given the difficulty of overtaking. Others might go for a more traditional approach starting with the softer compound. In short, it’s a race where the strategy can make a difference.”
