Max Verstappen was proclaimed Formula 1 world champion for the first time after a titanic duel against Lewis Hamilton throughout the 2021 season, however, it was the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that decided the final outcome.

After Nicholas Latifi crashed into the guards a few laps from the checkered flag, Michael Masi opted to bring the safety car on the track, although this period was full of controversy, because, initially, the lapped cars could not pass the leaders to let the two candidates for the title compete.
However, one lap from the end, Race Direction gave the green light for the cars to pass and Hamilton and Verstappen stayed fighting in the lap that closed the campaign.
