They change batteries for membranes that store energy

membrana-energia The batteries that we handle on a daily basis could have their days numbered. A team from the National Initiative for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Singapore (NUSNNI) has developed a membrane capable of storing electrical energy . Unlike traditional batteries, which require electrolytes and complex structures, the new material consists of a simple, very thin membrane, which not only offers better energy efficiency, but is also more economical and respectful with the environment .

To manufacture them, the researchers used a polystyrene polymer that, when placed between two charged metal plates, is capable of storing a charge of 0.2 farads per square centimeter . This beats standard capacitors, which have a storage limit of 1 microfarad per square centimeter.

As highlighted by Xie Xian Ning, co-author of the work, the effectiveness of the new membrane allows the creation of very simple devices with low manufacturing cost, with a performance superior to rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries and supercapacitors.

The potential applications of these membranes range from hybrid vehicles to solar panels and wind turbines , tla and as their creators claim in the journal Energy & Environmental Science .
