The Greta Thunberg Rain Frog ( Pristimantis gretathunbergae ) has bright colors and huge black eyes. It was discovered in the jungle of Panama, in the cloud forest of the Cerro Chucantí reserve, and has been named after the 18-year-old climate activist, Greta Thunberg.

Biologists Abel Batista (Panama) and Konrad Mebert (Switzerland) led the expedition. Of the new species of amphibian , they both point out that its eyes are unique to Central American rain frogs.

Unfortunately, the habitat of the Greta Thunberg frog is in danger due to rapid deforestation for plantations and cattle pastures.

"The Rainforest Trust is deeply honored to sponsor the naming of this exquisite and endangered frog species for Greta Thunberg," Rainforest Trust CEO James Deutsch said in a press release.

Thunberg, the young activist, recently criticized November's United Nations climate summit, known as COP26 , as a "PR event" and a "failure" for its lack of concern about the climate crisis we are in the midst of.
