It is no secret that those responsible for the current Formula 1 want to visit new places with little motoring tradition, such as Qatar or Saudi Arabia, since it is these countries that offer the most money for the fastest single-seaters in the world go at least one weekend a year.
Given the growing calendar, which has gone from less than 20 grands prix per season to around 25, with the consequent workload for all paddock employees, Liberty Media , the owners of the category, have no solution, and even they even stated that they could do more than 30 tests in a course if they wanted to.
However, the Agreement of Concord that the teams signed back in August 2020 establishes that the maximum number of competition weekends per year is 25, although that agreement ends at the end of 2015.
For this reason, if new venues enter Formula 1, inevitably, others will have to leave, and the focus is on historic circuits, such as Spa-Francorchamps or Monaco itself, although possible substitutions have also been mentioned, such as that of Kyalami replacing Paul Ricard .
It seems that this will be a difficult problem to solve for the heads of the Great Circus, but not for Carlos Sainz, who proposes a system to continue enjoying old-fashioned tracks along with unexplored places for Formula 1.
The Ferrari driver urged the use of a rotation of tracks in the calendar, which would allow having a variety of countries and venues every certain period of time: “We would all like to visit France and Spa-Francorchamps, but at the same time, this sport is growing at a rate that gives rise to new locations.
“These sites are paying a lot of money to be part of Formula 1,” said the Madrid native. “I think the best solution would be rotation, I understand that France or Belgium may not be on the calendar every season, but I hope we can go to those places every two or three years.”
“Even if Las Vegas, South Africa or anyone else joins the calendar, I hope we can go back to France or Spa-Francorchamps from time to time to continue enjoying these tracks, so maybe they can afford it,” acknowledged the Spaniard.
Currently, Formula 1 will visit 22 different circuits in 2022, after the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix, although for the next course Qatar will be officially included, which advanced its premiere in 2021 due to the pandemic, and Las Vegas, which will have the only race played on Saturday of the campaign.
