After the Bahrain GP that opened the 2022 Formula 1 season, Leclerc , the first winner of the year, went on to lead the championship, and his second place finish to Verstappen in the Saudi Arabian GP kept him top of the championship. But an accident by the Mexican in qualifying and an abandonment in the race due to reliability made him leave Canada with a 0, which together with Leclerc’s comeback (from 19th to 5th) allowed the Monegasque to stay close to second place in the world championship. When the championship came to the British GP, Verstappen suffered a car problem leading the race, eventually having to minimize damage and settle for 7th. Leclerc could not get on the podium to cut many points but Pérez, with second place, did shorten more distances.
In the Austrian sprint race, where the highest number of points was 8, Verstappen took the biggest haul, but Leclerc managed to drop just one point (he was second) and leave things pretty much the same. However, the leader suffered further degradation and was unable to beat the Ferraris, although Sainz’s withdrawal only allowed Leclerc to cut 6 points, although he was able to place second in the world championship.
