“Is there no Corona in Heaven?” And “Put Corona in your sack!”: The Christmas post office in Himmelstadt has already closed, but as long as letters arrive, they will be answered.
Himmelstadt – In addition to toys, children also want a time without Corona, adults a partner by their side: The Christmas post office in Himmelstadt (Bavaria) is literally flooded with wish lists before Christmas Eve.
“Have you already been vaccinated?”, “Is there no Corona in heaven?” And “Put Corona in your sack!” – the boys and girls write to the Christ Child and Santa Claus. The deadline for submissions is actually long ago, but “as long as something arrives, the letters will also be answered”, promises the honorary head of the Christmas post office, Rosemarie Schotte.
Corona and flood disaster
Corona, Corona, Corona: “This is a topic that worries every child,” says the 81-year-old, who has been answering children’s letters since 1993 – this year together with around 35 volunteers. But the students didn’t just write about the pandemic. The devastating flood in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia in mid-July is also an issue. “With us everything is gone,” quotes Schotte from a letter from the disaster region.
The helpers at the Christmas post office have already answered around 40,000 wish lists – partly with a personal letter, partly with a standardized letter from the Christ Child. Last year there were a total of around 70,000.
Many adults write too
And it’s not just children who send their wishes to the Christ Child. “Some adults write many pages. They want a man or are looking for a woman, ”says Schotte. “Lots of things that don’t really belong here. That takes up time. “
The Christmas post office in Himmelsberg, Thuringia, had received around 6,000 letters by the fourth Advent, and Manuela Verges from the local homeland association responsible is expecting around 1,000 more letters by Christmas Eve.
