US airline Boom Supersonic has revealed stunning new design images of its ultra-fast Overture aircraft. The company, which aims to usher in a new era of sustainable supersonic commercial flight , already has deals with United Airlines and Japan Airlines that will buy its plane in development.

According to the company, the supersonic plane will fly at twice the speed of current commercial airliners and will be able to cross from New York to London in just 3.5 hours.

One more step for supersonic travel

The Colorado-based company says the Overture supersonic plane will carry between 65 and 80 passengers and fly at Mach 1.7 (approximately 2,000 kilometers per hour) over oceans and Mach 1 over land. The plane will also run on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the company expects it to enter production by 2024.

The latest look of the Overture aircraft was unveiled at the Farnborough International Air Show in the UK a few days ago.

Though not yet built, its design is the culmination of millions of hours of software simulation , five wind tunnel tests, and dozens of evaluations. And, unlike the Concorde, the Overture does think about the environment . Its design is designed to produce zero emissions and will work with 100% sustainable fuels.

Boom Supersonic Senior Vice President Brian Durrence said the company wants to “remove barriers to experiencing the planet” for people. To reach that goal, it has had to do some design iterations like carrying fewer passengers than previously estimated. This will make it quieter and more efficient.

The aircraft will feature hum-free engines, no afterburners , and feature the world’s first automated noise reduction system. This means that it shouldn’t be noisier than a conventional aircraft during takeoff.

Boom will assemble the “iron bird,” a plane-shaped skeletal structure made of steel, about 60 meters long and 30 meters wide, to begin testing and, if all goes well, they hope to start aircraft production. supersonics in 2024.
