In the east of Russia, countless trees are still on fire. In some places in particular, the smoke causes a lot of trouble for people.

Yakutsk – The toxic smoke from the severe forest fires in eastern Russia continues to spread. More than 60 villages and the city of Yakutsk in the particularly affected Siberian region of Yakutia (Republic of Sakha) suffered from the smoke, the authorities said.

The civil defense of the Khabarovsk region on the Pacific warned that smoke had now moved to the areas further east due to unfavorable winds. Residents should wear protective masks when leaving the house. Doors and windows should be sealed.

At the beginning of the week, the fire brigade counted 190 fires in the Yakutia region. As can be seen from data from the forest protection authority, the fire area on which the fire is extinguished is around 697,000 hectares, slightly smaller than the day before. That corresponds to about half of the area of Schleswig-Holstein. More than 2000 emergency services are therefore on site. Fire fighting planes are supposed to prevent villages from burning down.

There are more than 6,500 firefighters across the country. There are currently more than 300 fires on an area of 853,000 hectares that are being fought. In addition, there are many fires that cannot be extinguished because they are raging in remote regions. dpa
