Several provinces in Thailand have now been declared disaster areas. Six people have already died in the tropical storm.

Bangkok – Heavy rains have triggered flash floods and severe flooding in parts of Thailand.

Since the end of last week, six people have died, five of them in the central Lopburi region and one in Phetchabun in the north, the civil protection agency said. Two other people are still missing. So far, 30 provinces have been affected. Almost two dozen of them were declared a disaster area.

This is due to a severe tropical storm, which has mainly moved across the north of the country since the weekend. Meanwhile, the water level of the Chao Phraya River has risen sharply, it said. In the catchment area, including the capital Bangkok, warnings have now also been issued against flooding.

During the rainy season in Thailand between July and October there are frequent floods. dpa
