Trump is confronted in a telephone interview – and hangs up

Donald Trump goes on to claim that his presidency was stolen from him. This is challenged in an interview – whereupon Trump breaks off.

Washington DC – Donald Trump’s relationship with the US press is notoriously difficult. During his tenure, the former president had to at least occasionally face questions from the critical media, which he described as “fake news”. Since his defeat in the US presidential election in 2020, however, Trump has been addressing the public primarily through his own channels. The exception was an interview with the non-commercial radio station npr on Tuesday (January 11th, 2022) – which Trump promptly broke off.

In addition to questions about Corona, the conversation mainly revolved around the last US presidential election, which Donald Trump continues to claim had been stolen from him. Since then, Trump has used his influence on the Republican Party to support this narrative. Steve Inskeep, who conducted the interview, challenged Trump’s testimony, whereupon Trump simply ended the call.

USA: Trump divides Republicans with presidential election claims

Inskeep first asked Trump whether it would not be a disadvantage for the Republicans to focus on the past US election. “No, I think it’s an advantage,” replied the former president, referring to fellow party member Kari Lake, who is running for the gubernatorial election in Arizona. Lake also claims that the election was stolen and is therefore allowed to share the stage at a Trump rally with conspiracy believers on Saturday (January 15, 2022).

Inskeep also spoke to Trump about the counterexample to Kari Lake: Several commissions and judges convened by the Republicans in the United States had come to the conclusion that there had been no significant problems with the election. In addition, the US Senator Mike Rounds had recently called the election “fair”, whereupon Trump called the Republican an “idiot”.

US presidential election: Trump defends allegations

Donald Trump tried to defend his claims: “Look at Philadelphia,” said the former US President. “Is it true that there were many more votes than voters?” “That is not true,” replied Inskeep, explaining that such statistics were early, incomplete reports. Trump also questioned that 80 million people would vote for Joe Biden: “How is it that when he was speaking in different places no one came to watch him but he suddenly got 80 million votes?” Inskeep replied, “If Forgive me, maybe because the election was about you. “

That was apparently enough for Trump, and he ended the interview shortly afterwards. Interviewer Steve Inskeept, who said he had tried to arrange an interview with Trump since 2015, was in the middle of his next question when the connection ended. The final words of the interview transcript, which can be found online, are “He’s gone. OK.”

The ex-president had previously ended talks with the media prematurely: he then published the “60 Minutes” interview with Donald Trump on his Facebook page. (vbu)
