Los Angeles – In a comment about the new abortion law in Texas, Hollywood star Uma Thurman made it public that she herself terminated a pregnancy many years ago.
“The abortion I performed as a teenager was the most difficult decision of my life, one that caused me pain back then and is still making me sad,” the 51-year-old wrote in the Washington Post on Tuesday (local time) .
“In my late teens, I accidentally became pregnant by a significantly older man. I lived out of a suitcase in Europe, far from my family, and was about to start a job, ”Thurman wrote. Together with her family, she decided to terminate the pregnancy. “My heart was broken anyway.” But she is still happy about her decision to this day. She did not have her three children until later, when she was ready and “with men whom I loved and whom I trusted”.
She now wanted to share her experience in view of the new abortion law in Texas in order to show solidarity with affected women and girls who may feel ashamed of their situation, Thurman said. She was sharply criticized by the law.
A law has been in force in Texas for three weeks now that prohibits abortions once the fetus’s heartbeat has been detected. This can be the case as early as the sixth week of pregnancy.
