Unemployment rate falls to 3.2% in the second quarter of 2022

In the second quarter of the year, the unemployment rate stood at 3.2% ( 1.9 million people), that is, a figure lower than that observed in the second quarter of 2021 , when 2.4 million Mexicans were looking for work without finding it ( 4.2 % ), reported this Thursday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

In the country, 99.1 million people aged 15 and over who are of working age were counted. But, of them, only 59.3 million looked for work and 96.8% found it .

Thus, in the country there were 57.4 million people who remained employedeconomically active population (EAP) – during the period from April to June . This is 2.2 million more people than in the same period of 2021.

Compared to the first quarter of 2022, unemployment fell 0.3 percentage points, Inegi said in a statement.

Work under critical conditions and informality

30.5% of the employed population did so under critical conditions of occupation. This includes people who work less than 35 hours a week for reasons beyond their control, those who work more than 35 hours a week with monthly earnings below the minimum wage, and those who work more than 48 hours a week and earn up to two minimum wage.

Finally, the informality rate stood at 55.7% , during the second quarter of 2022. In this sector, employed people who are considered occupationally vulnerable , for lacking , for example, social security , despite the fact that they work for a company incorporated .

More than 70% earn less than 2 minimum wages

About 39.2 million people work as subordinates and receive remuneration, but of this total, 30.5% earn up to one minimum wage and 39.2% earn between 1 and 2 minimum wages.

Furthermore, 16.6 million of this group of workers work without a written contract .
