In the first five months of this year, the Mexicans who were unemployed have withdrawn 8,617.6 million pesos (mp) from their Afore.

The amount of withdrawals is 28.3% higher than that registered in the same period of 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to information from the National Retirement Savings Commission (Consar) released this Tuesday.

It should be remembered that in order for a person to request unemployment assistance from their Afore, they must have more than 45 days without contributing to the IMSS and have their biometric file updated.

It is also necessary that the worker has been in an Afore for at least three years, have two or more years of Social Security contributions and have not requested this support in five years. Consequently, any worker who withdraws money from his Afore, will be deducted weeks of contributions, necessary to access a pension.

In May, the amount of withdrawals was 1,753.5 million pesos and added two consecutive months to the decline.

The Afores that registered the highest number of withdrawals were Coppel, with 381.6 million pesos; Azteca, with 326.6 million pesos and XXI Banorte , where withdrawals were made for 299.3 million pesos.

In May, the creation of 38,961 formal jobs was registered with the IMSS, for a total of 20.1 million jobs. To reach pre-pandemic levels, 504,092 jobs are still missing.

In 2020, the pandemic crisis caused a record number of unemployment retirements to be recorded, with October and July being the months with the most money withdrawn.
