The punishment was not made of paper: A tourist from the USA had to shell out a decent sum for repeatedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – With more than 10,000 euros in cash, an American tourist in Bavaria averted a prison sentence. Police checked the driver on Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and determined by breath alcohol test that he was drunk, the police announced on Monday.

In addition, the officers ordered a blood sample and found out that there was an arrest warrant for the 76-year-old from 2019 – even then, the man was drunk in Germany when he drove, it said.

According to a police spokesman, a public prosecutor calculated the expected fine for the two drunk driving. This is a common practice for foreign offenders who are not resident in Germany. The 76-year-old then reportedly withdrew around 10,400 euros from his account and paid the fine in cash. dpa
