During the first free practice of the Belgian Grand Prix, the FIA confirmed that Max Verstappen would suffer a grid penalty for Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps. The Dutchman will have to start from the back of the field due to the change of several of the components of the power unit of his Red Bull.

Despite the fact that the current world champion will start from the back of the Belgian track, he will not be alone, as his main rival in the fight for the title, Charles Leclerc, will also have to start from the back of the grid.

The international federation document details the new parts that the pilots will mount, and Max Verstappen has chosen to update its internal combustion engine, the turbo, the MGU-H, MGU-K, battery and control unit , that is, all the components.

As the regulations indicate, since it involves more than 15 penalty positions, the Dutchman will be forced to start from the bottom of the grid, in a result that will be decided in Saturday’s classification, since those who have the same penalty they will be able to fight to stay ahead to get a more advanced position.

For this reason, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc will fight with Lando Norris and Esteban Ocon, who have also received a penalty greater than 15 places by the FIA for mounting new parts on their engines.

In the case of the British and the French, they release ICE and turbo, although Alpine also introduces an MGU-H and an extra battery. Valtteri Bottas will get a fresh engine, MGU-H and turbo, as well as the gearbox, giving Alfa Romeo’s Finn a 15-place penalty.

For his part, Mick Schumacher will have to add five places to his original position after changing the control unit and the gearbox.
