After the accident that ended the race of the 2022 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix of Carlos Sainz on the first lap, the appointment continued its course, but a Safety Car caused by Valtteri Bottas before reaching the equator changed the direction of the Test. The field regrouped behind the safety car, and those who hadn’t made the pit stop were able to fit a fresh set of tyres, which benefited them.

As a result, Fernando Alonso managed to move up to ninth, and after overtaking Pierre Gasly at the restart, he went for his next Aston Martin team-mate, Lance Stroll. By the time they reached the back straight, the Spaniard caught the slipstream of the Canadian to go to the left side of the track and continue his comeback.

The Alpine rider had everything set to move up to eighth, but Stroll suddenly moved, causing the two-time world champion to be helpless and crash into the AMR22. That sent Alonso flying and hitting the wall, leaving the Aston Martin with some damage that forced him to leave.

For his part, the Spaniard continued in the race, but had to go through the pitlane to fix the broken front wing of his A522, thus falling to the bottom of the table and with his car quite damaged, which caused him to lose performance. The man from Oviedo was able to ride a hard compound to try to continue the race in Austin, where Max Verstappen would win.

For his part, and despite the fact that he had to give in to Lando Norris on the penultimate lap, Alonso achieved a very creditable and brilliant seventh place.
